A mother aged 20 years who experienced mental health and drug issues applied for clarification of the requirements of a supervision order for a child aged 3 years. The child had lived with his maternal grandfather since the parents separated when he was aged 3 months. There was a plan for the child to transition in a graduated approach that was supervised by the maternal grandfather to the full time care of the mother by the time the child was aged 5 years.
The judge defined supervision standards to mean that the maternal grandfather was required to be present at his home at all times when the mother and child were present; to be present when the mother and child were together away from the home for whatever reason; and to remove the child from the presence of the mother as necessary.
